The blueberry season in Romania is progressing positively, despite the demanding weather conditions recorded over the past few weeks.
According to Simón Muñoz, international blueberry production advisor at Consultora Agrícola y Comercial Santa María (CASM Blueberries), following his visit this week to orchards in the country, extreme temperatures ranging from -4 to -14 °C were recorded, along with heavy snowfall last Saturday that accumulated between 10 and 30 centimeters of snow in areas near Craiova.
The main objective of the visit to Oltenia Pepeniere’s orchards was to define pruning guidelines for the Duke and Bluecrop varieties, as well as structural management for the Sekoya Crunch and Sekoya Fiesta varieties.
“With these pruning guidelines, we aim to increase fruit quality, renew wood, and improve plant structure. In the case of the Sekoya varieties, our goal is to maximize productivity and profitability in young plants that have not yet reached their expected performance,” explained Muñoz.
According to the expert, in addition to fieldwork, a thorough review of management protocols was carried out, along with recommendations on fertilization and health and nutrition monitoring. “Together with the company’s technical team, we agreed to carry out a follow-up visit in the last days of April and the first days of May,” said the international advisor.
