One of the keys to the globalization of blueberries and their arrival in optimal condition to different markets is proper postharvest management. From the moment the fruit is detached from the plant, a true race against time begins to preserve its quality and condition.

“Among postharvest factors, one of the main aspects in maintaining the quality of any perishable product is the cold chain: if you don’t have a cold chain, you have nothing,” states Dr. Luis Luchsinger, a specialist in physiology and postharvest management.

The renowned expert will be one of the speakers at the 2nd International Specialization Course on Blueberry Production, organized by Consultora Agrícola y Comercial Santa María (CASM Blueberries), where he will address critical aspects to ensure high-quality fruit at destination.

One of the recurring challenges for the blueberry industry, both in Peru and Chile, has been the incidence of decay. In this context, the use of SO₂ fumigation chambers has proven to be an effective tool within the postharvest process. Their application must be carried out as quickly as possible to ensure uniform gas distribution and prevent weight loss. “The fumigation chamber is essential because it helps reduce exogenous Botrytis levels; in addition, it promotes wound healing and reduces weight loss,” the specialist explains.
