The blueberry season in Serbia is developing positively. This was highlighted to Blueberries News by Dejan Djusic, General Manager of First Blueberry doo, a company based in Šabac, western Serbia, one of the country’s most prominent blueberry-growing regions.
Djusic explained that, as is often the case, weather conditions have influenced orchard development, with frost events, strong winds, and other climatic factors requiring careful agronomic management throughout the season.
Regarding the main challenges facing growers, he noted that these are focused on maintaining plants in optimal sanitary and physiological condition in order to achieve higher yields and produce premium-quality fruit.
“One of the opportunities for Serbia is our production window, which generally coincides with favorable market prices. As for prices, we expect a good season, as all indications suggest that there is not enough fruit available on the market,” he emphasized.
However, the executive warned that the industry also faces significant competitive challenges.
“One of our challenges is competition from other countries, such as Georgia, Turkey, and Egypt, whose seasons partially overlap with ours. Among the threats we face are rising fertilizer and fuel costs,” he explained.
