Although Mexico’s frozen blueberry industry has gained momentum in recent years, the supply of fruit available for this segment remains limited.

According to the National Association of Berry Exporters of Mexico (Aneberries), significant opportunities exist for the country to expand its frozen blueberry exports to international markets. Demand is strong and processing capacity is available; however, fruit availability and competitiveness at origin continue to constrain growth.

Currently, the main export destinations for Mexican frozen blueberries are the United States, Australia, Guatemala, Singapore, Canada, and Japan.

Regarding the challenges facing the industry, Aneberries points out that the primary obstacle is securing an adequate supply of fruit that meets the quality requirements for freezing.

“A large share of production is destined for the fresh market, leaving very limited volumes suitable for processing. Supply and demand dynamics restrict availability, particularly given that Mexico’s production is still relatively limited, making it difficult to meet fresh market demand while also allocating greater volumes to the frozen sector,” the association explained.

Growing Demand and Emerging Opportunities

Regarding trends in destination markets, Aneberries highlights growing demand for frozen blueberries across a variety of formats and distribution channels.

“The market offers opportunities both for retail-packaged products and for fruit destined for industrial processing, including dried blueberries, jams, and other processed food products. In addition, the food service (HORECA) channel continues to expand its demand for a wide range of applications,” the association noted.

Aneberries added that one of the main drivers behind consumption growth is the increasing recognition among consumers of the nutritional benefits associated with blueberries.

“Demand is being strengthened by the perception of blueberries as a fruit with numerous health benefits, particularly due to their high antioxidant content and relatively low sugar levels compared to many other fruits,” the association concluded.
